Message from our Headteacher

Welcome to our website.

What makes a school exceptional? High academic standards for sure. A broad curriculum? Teaching which matches the needs of each pupil? A wide range of extra-curricular activities? No one could argue with any of them and at West Ashtead that is what we aim to provide, but then so does every other school. So what sets us apart? Well, we don’t want to be only outstanding, we want to be exceptional.

We believe for a school to be truly exceptional it must value each child so that they are known not just by their performance data but by their personality, their strengths, their talents and their special needs. And that means all children, not just those at the extremes of the ability range. At West Ashtead there are no invisible children; every child has a clear identity and every child matters to us. Our aim is to enable our children to become independent, confident and resilient individuals who have the skills and attitudes to be successful at secondary school and beyond.   We aim to make learning exciting and engaging so that children come to school to learn not because they have to but because they want to.

Currently the school is on an exciting journey to make that vision a reality. Although rated ‘good’ by Ofsted we want to do even better so we are improving further the quality of our teaching, the quality of our curriculum, the range of enrichment activities we provide to enhance that curriculum. We are improving our facilities and making sure each aspect of the school is resourced well so that our children have the greatest chance to be successful. We have improved our pastoral system to ensure that children get the support and care they need. We have redesigned the way we manage Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) so that a child with SEND is identified and supported within weeks of joining the school. We are improving the already excellent standard of children’s behaviour by making our children responsible for what they say and what they do and we build into everything we do our core values, our 3R’s: RESPECT   RESPONSIBILITY and RESILIENCE. If our children have those values they won’t go too far wrong!

West Ashtead is a friendly, high achieving school. We have not reached our destination yet but we are well on our way and we would love you to join us on our journey. If you would like to see how far we have got, why not visit us and find out for yourself?
